Tallahassee – The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation announced today that two new companies have been given the green light to enter the state's medical malpractice insurance market. Healthcare Underwriters Insurance Group of Florida and Pediatricians Insurance Risk Retention Group of America, Inc. are expected to begin providing coverage soon.
Director of the Office of Insurance Regulation Kevin McCarty welcomed the new companies into the market saying, "Governor Bush and the Legislature have worked hard to improve the environment for medical malpractice insurers. It is certainly great news to have these new insurers to expand the opportunities for physicians to find good coverage"
Healthcare Underwriters Group of Florida plans to write policies for all physician specialties and the non-physician health care providers who are employed by them. CEO Steven L. Salman said his company will operate exclusively in Florida: "We find the environment in the state to be a perfect fit for our business model. We are confident we can meet the needs of this market."
Pediatricians Insurance Risk Retention Group of America plans to provide coverage for pediatricians statewide. Founder Eugene Rosov looks forward to operating in Florida, saying the Governor and Legislature "did a very good job" in reforming the medical malpractice system.
