Medical Malpractice Rate Hearings Scheduled At Request Of The Consumer Advocate
Wednesday, January 24, 2007
Tallahassee (January 24, 2007)  The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (Office) has scheduled public hearings to review medical malpractice rates at the request of the Florida's Insurance Consumer Advocate Steve Burgess.
In 2003, the Florida Legislature passed medical malpractice insurance reform mandating a reduction in all medical malpractice insurance premiums. Implementing excessive medical malpractice rates is a violation of Florida law.
The Consumer Advocate is concerned about Pro National Insurance Company's (PNIC) recent filing that requested an overall rate decrease of 8.6 percent in Florida for its medical malpractice liability policies.  The Consumer Advocate has petitioned the Office of Insurance Regulation to initiate a proceeding to review PNIC's rate filing.  The Consumer Advocate is entitled to request this proceeding pursuant to section 627.0613, Florida Statutes.
The hearing for the PNIC rates and all other medical malpractice rates will be held in Tallahassee, at the Senate Office Building, room 401, at The Capitol, on January 30, 2007.  The hearing for PNIC is scheduled to occur at 10:00 a.m. and the general hearing on medical malpractices rates will occur at 1:00 p.m.
The hearing is open to the public and input from interested parties is encouraged.  Anyone unable to attend the hearings is welcome to forward comments to ratehearings@fldfs.com.  The subject line of e-mail correspondence should read "Medical Malpractice Rates."
Pursuant to the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, any person requiring special accommodations to participate in this hearing should telephone Sam Coskey at (850) 413-2616 or e-mail sam.coskey@fldfs.com at least 48 hours prior to the hearing.
