Tallahassee - The Office of Insurance Regulation is pleased to announce that it has approved Aetna Life Insurance Company and Aetna Healthcare product filings to enter the individual major medical insurance market with both PPO and HMO products.  This action by Aetna provides the state with a new large and reputable player to enhance the growing individual health insurance market.
Aetna will begin selling the policies in December.  Although utilizing a different marketing strategy in other states, Aetna has elected to file as an in-state carrier in Florida.  This decision ensures that Floridians are provided all of the consumer protections that are afforded in Florida law.  Aetna is using out-of-state association group to enter other new states.
"I am especially gratified that they have chosen to enter the market in this manner that ensures consumer protections," Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty said. "Out-of-state association groups are primarily governed by rules of another state and frequently allow rating practices that would be prohibited in Florida."
Aetna will offering comprehensive medical expense benefits with a $5 million lifetime benefit and a number of policy options, including calendar-year deductibles of $1,500, $2,500 or $5,000 and out-of-pocket maximums of $3,000 to $7,500. The company will also offer two Health Savings Account compatible plans with $2,750 and $5,000 calendar-year deductibles.
The new policies will be marketed through brokers and directly to consumers through direct mail, telemarketing and the internet.
