Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty joins more than 30 state insurance commissioners in a meeting with President Barack Obama today to discuss the states’ role in implementing federal health care reform.

One of the most notable short-term impending implementation concerns is defining Medical Loss Ratios (MLR) by January, 2011. Florida held a public hearing in Orlando last May to gather information related to federal health care and the potential impact as it relates to MLR.  Additionally, Florida partnered with other state regulators in crafting a resolution that supports the role of insurance agents, something regulators fear will not be included in the equation as a result of new MLR requirements.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is coordinating a post-meeting media availability with insurance commissioners. Please contact the NAIC Communications Division at (816) 783-8909 to schedule an on-camera interview with an NAIC member.

The following NAIC members will be available:
  • Jane L. Cline, NAIC President and West Virginia Insurance Commissioner
  • Susan E. Voss, NAIC President-Elect and Iowa Insurance Commissioner
  • Kevin M. McCarty, NAIC Vice President and Florida Insurance Commissioner
  • Sandy Praeger, NAIC Chair of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee and Kansas Insurance Commissioner
Various members of the NAIC
